More than one thousand people were evacuated a pipeline owned by Pemex leaked ammonia gas in Oaxaca, Mexico on August 20. It was reported that at least three people were killed and some 40 others were poisoned.

According to Reuters, Pemex said the pipeline was damaged by heavy machinery operated by a private company doing road work in the area.

Pemex is said to have a poor safety record in recent years. Nearly 40 people were killed in January in a massive explosion at the company's Mexico City headquarters. The blast was reportedly caused by a buildup of methane and other gases that had collected for years in the basement of the building without ventilation.
