Brazil building collapse: at least 7 killed, some still missing

At least seven people were killed and many were injured after a building collapsed in Sao Paulo, Brazil on August 27. It is believed about 35 people were in the building when the collapse occurred at about 8:30 a.m. local time.

Local media reports the building, located on Avenida Mateo Bei in the area of Sao Mateus, had been a two-story edifice in the final stage of construction when it collapsed. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.

According to Reuters, "firefighters and rescue workers cut and dug through the rubble all day in an effort to free victims from the wreckage.

Retiree local to the area, Aparecida de Jesus, described what happened to her when she was near the site of the collapsing building.

"I was going over there close to the butcher's and something white appeared that didn't look like smoke. I thought I was sick. I ran ahead and saw people crying and I asked what was happening and then I saw it fall. A huge part fell and almost got me. It did get my friend," Jesus said.

Marcos Palumbo, a firefighter captain working the scene, said that the possibility of more victims was real.

"Unfortunately we have registered 24 people injured, three deaths that were retrieved from the location and three fatalities that we have still not retrieved. There is the possibility that we have more victims. As soon as we have confirmation we will pass on the information," Palumbo said.
