Gunman killed: bus hijack, street shootout in Seattle

2013-10-04 1 Dailymotion

A 64-year-old Seattle bus driver, Deloy Depuis, was shot on Monday in the beginning of a series of events that led to the shooting death of his assailant by police.

According to police, the alleged assailant, Martin Duckworth, first boarded the bus from the rear door with two other passengers. However, Depuis asked them to go to the front of the bus to pay. The other passengers reentered the bus through the front door, but Duckworth paced back and forth before attacked Duckworth by hitting him. Duckworth then pulled out a gun and shot Depuis, injuring him in the torso and cheek.

From there, Duckworth fled on foot through downtown Seattle, trying to hijack a service truck and car before boarding another city bus about a block away. Police confronted him at the bus, and this was when Duckworth raised his gun and fired at least two shots. Police returned fire, critically wounding Duckworth. He taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Two officers suffered minor injuries in the shooting incident, possibly from broken glass. Two passengers also suffered minor bruising while trying to flee from the second bus.

King County Executive Dow Constantine visited Depuis at Harborview Medical Center, and said the bus driver seemed to be in good spirits, almost immediately asking how his passengers were.
