Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Saturday (October 5) to take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit which is due to take place next week.

Earlier in the week, Xi became the first foreign leader to address Indonesian MPs in parliament.

China is already Indonesia's biggest trading partner after Japan. The two were expected to finalize a raft of deals, mainly in the mining sector, worth more than $30 billion during Xi's visit.

With American President Barack Obama canceling his Asia visit due to the U.S. government shutdown, the spotlight in APEC falls onto Xi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Analysts have said Obama's no-show would work to China's advantage. Xi has used his visit to try to lift relations in the region, saying China hoped trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations would reach $1 trillion by 2020.
