Eating food that is rich in grains is commonly believed to be a healthy choice, but one expert thinks this is a misconception that is the root cause behind some kinds of dementia.

According to David Perlmutter, president of the Perlmutter Health Center in Naples, Florida, and the author of a book entitled ‘Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers’ eating carbohydrates like grains can have detrimental effects on the human brain.

Perlmutter argues that a diet rich in carbohydrates, including foods that have whole grains, is contributing to the increased rates of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in the human population.

He also says that a diet of only 5 percent carbohydrates is closer to what people have eaten for the vast majority of human history.

Some research suggests that Alzheimer’s disease might actually be a third form of diabetes brought on by dietary choices.

Other experts disagree with Perlmutter’s conclusion, saying that the evidence he uses in his book might be misleading and a diet high in fat is not good for cardiovascular health.
