Dead Pennsylvania woman turns up alive in Florida

A Pennsylvania mother of two, who disappeared 11 years ago and was thought to be dead, has turned up alive in Florida.

Brenda Heist, who was 42 when she disappeared from Lititz, Pennsylvania 11 years ago, was declared dead in 2009. Last week, after years of working odd jobs, panhandling, sleeping under bridges and scavenging for food, Heist turned herself into the local authorities in Key Largo. Heist explained she had been going through an amicable divorce when she was refused housing assistance.

She went to a park and cried when two men and woman befriended her. They were homeless and heading for southern Florida and invited her to go with them. She made a quick decision to follow, leaving piles of sorted laundry unwashed, and pork chops thawing in her refrigerator at home. While Lancaster authorities searched for her in the area, she hitchhiked to Florida, taking about a month to get there.
