Malaysia stolen truck driver shot after attacking police officer

A man was shot in the leg after he attempted to flee after attacking a traffic policeman trying to arrest him in Taman Kandis Permai, Friday morning.

The 30-year-old suspect was seen driving a truck dangerously with two other passengers by a traffic policeman directing traffic for run organized by Sekolah Menengah Jalan Kebun in Shah Alam, according to the News Straits Times.

The policeman was watching traffic when he saw the truck overtake vehicles in a dangerous manner, said Klang South police chief Assistant Commissioner Kamarul Zaman Mamat.

"The policeman signaled the driver to stop but he ignored him and sped away, forcing the policeman to give chase. About 7km later, he stopped the lorry. There was a struggle and the policeman fired a shot at the suspect's leg in self-defence," Mamat said.

Mamat said the suspect attacked and wounded the policeman with a knife in the scuffle. An witness who declined to be identified said she was in front of her house talking to neighbors in Jalan Samarinda 5C when she saw a truck being chased by a policeman on a motorcycle.

"The lorry driver tried to ram the policeman's motorcycle and he fell in front of my house. The driver then got out and attacked the policeman, while his two friends ran towards the bushes and escaped. The driver then tried to escape. The policeman told him to surrender but he refused. Then I heard a shot fired," she said.

The truck was reported stolen in Pandamaran Jaya on Feb 16.
