One killed in 'anti-coup' protest in Cairo

One protester was killed in clashes with Egyptian security forces on March 26. The demonstrators were protesting the over 500 death sentences given to Muslim Brotherhood supporters on Monday.

On March 24, an Egyptian court sentenced 529 alleged Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death, sparking an outcry in Egypt and the world.

Protesters, many of them students, assembled near Cairo University to condemn the sentences, and were met with force by Egyptian security forces.

Riot police used tear gas and water cannons against the protesters and reports say police fired birdshot into the crowds.

Birdshot is fired from a rifle and uses a plastic shell packed with small balls of metal.

When fired, the birdshot shell scatters its metal fragments over a wide area, and can be fatal at close range.

Egyptian television also showed images of plainclothes police officers grabbing protesters and leading them away in blindfolds.

Some of the protesters were seen throwing petrol bombs and fireworks at police in violence came on the same day that Egypt's military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced he has resigned from the military and confirmed he will run for president in an election he is expected to win easily.
