Illegal cockfighting: huge ring raided in Miami, 200 busted for animal cruelty

Around 200 people were detained on Thursday afternoon after police uncovered an illegal cockfighting ring in Miami.

According to local reports, the illegal cockfights were being held in a multi-acre property covered with large hedges in Southwest Miami-Dade County. Those involved parked their vehicles under trees.

After months of surveillance, police raided the address and found an active fight going on between two roosters, WSVN TV reported.

In a cockfight, two roosters are placed inside a circular ring after usually being dosed with steroids, which prepare them to fight. They are also fitted with spikes, which makes them fighting to the death.

Dozens of cages were also found in the property, housing between 30 and 50 cocks, many of them already dead, CBS Miami reported.

Since Miami police arrested about 200 people, corrections buses were brought into the property to carry them to the county jail.

Those arrested are being questioned one by one and will face various charges related to drugs, possession of weapons, illegal gambling, illegal sale of alcohol, and animal cruelty, WSVN TV reported.

Thousands of dollars, drugs and firearms were also confiscated.

According to CBS Miami, under a court order the owner of the property will have to properly care for the remaining roosters until the trial.

Though cockfighting is fairly common in deep South Miami-Dade, the Miami Herald quoted Miami-Dade Detective Roy Rutland as saying that the bust was one of the larger that have been seen a while.
