A civilian diver died on Tuesday in South Korean waters while taking part into a search mission to recover victims still missing from the last month ferry disaster.

According to the BBC, the 53-years-old diver, only known by his surname Lee, entered the water at around 6 AM.

It was his first search attempt in the Sewol ferry, authorities said.
He reportedly dived around 25 metres deep, but five minutes into his dive he lost radio contact. He fell unconscious and was later pulled to the water surface by his fellow divers. According to the Straits Times, he was then brought to a hospital in Mokpo, a south-western port city located near the sinking site, but died soon after.

State news agency Yonhap reported that Lee was a veteran crew member of Undine Marine Industries, which specialises in maritime engineering and rescue work.

Local Coast Guard officials said they have suspended all search efforts for the time being because of the accident, the Straits Times reported.

Last week another civilian diver fell unconscious after diving four times before daybreak during a search mission to retrieve more victims.

According to Reuters, only 174 people have been rescued so far following the sinking of the Sewol. The confirmed death toll is now 263, with 39 still missing.
