Richard Allen Beevor - It Could Only Happen To Me

2014-06-12 5 Dailymotion

We stood in Holborn station,
ten minutes the train will leave,
amidst people reaching destinations,
winter air so hard to breathe.

Littered baskets, seats and kiosks,
tickets on the ground,
one word from your lips
would make me turn around.

If only I had asked you wait!
Please don't go yet,
stop and talk to me,
my life's moment go I let.

Thoughts:
If I had touched your hand,
if I caressed your hair,
if I kissed your fingertips,
if I had shown my care.

Will you return and talk again
can I hold you close,
let me really understand
the one I love the most.

City streets of yellow lights
on nights so dark and wintry,
a year has passed since you left
how long the hours defeat me.

Nights of making love
moments our eyes have seen,
ecstasy of joy surrounds our bed,
breathing out as you are breathing in.

I still have the memory
to keep our love anew,
how can love fade
for someone as lovely as you.

Now back into my world
where life is day to day,
you never come to the train
no more, my heart gone away.

I had a moment of light
in a lifetime of darkness,
a way to change this tangled mess,
a way of escape but no more, no less.

I failed to reach the gate,
the train disappeared in vain,
in my foolish self doubt
I will never see you again.
