Cleavage

Between the East and West there is a cleavage
that’s made apparent by a cartoon jest;
accommodation to the Muslims’ grieve itch
won’t cause our plunging necklines to be blessed.
Though some say, “Let us drift apart, and let
the West ignore the words the Muslims say, ”
we face an existential threat
unless we veil our décolleté.
My reference here western heaving bosoms
highlights the significance of cleavage,
when glimpsed through prudish and improper prisms,
refracted by the strong lens of believeage.

Samuel J. Landau writes in a letter to The NY Times on February 10,2006:
David Brooks brilliantly describes the fundamental clash of two very different civilizations and the philosophical cleavage of East and West. Unfortunately, his column does not note that this gap has been worsened by our tragic involvement in Iraq. Unless we resolve to put an end to our involvement, we can be assured that the two civilizations will drift further and further apart, with people everywhere in perpetual danger.
