What’s left of God’s purpose when there is no God
is a sense that though absent he wants to feel missed,
which causes behavior that’s even more odd,
the need to start praying for him to exist.

In Tom Stoppard’s “The Invention of Love, ” A. E. Housman says: “Only to shine some light, it doesn’t matter on what. It’s the light itself against the darkness, it’s what’s left of God’s purpose when you take away God.
