Three men ride an elephant in Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Kaziranga National Park lies partly in Golaghat District and partly in Nagaon District of Assam. It is the oldest park in Assam and covers an area of 430 sq kms alongside the Bhamaputra on the northern side and the Karbi Anglong Hills on the southern side. National Highway 37 also passes through the area and one may sometimes even see wild Indian rhinoceroses and elephants straying close to the highway itself!

Kaziranga National Park is also a world heritage site, mostly known for the large numbers of great Indian one-horned rhinoceroses that reside within. The landscape of Kaziranga is mostly composed of thick forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes and shallow ponds. It was officially declared a national park in 1974.

Kaziranga National Park is one of the last areas in Eastern India undisturbed by the presence of humans. It is currently inhabited by the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many other mammals including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears. It is also home to thousands of birds of varying species.
