The people of Ladakh are mainly engaged in animal husbandry in the absence of cultivated land. They earn their livelihood rearing animals like cows, sheeps, yaks, goats, horses and donkeys. The livestock provide them with meat, diary products, clothes and shelter for their survival in cold high lonely plateau.

Ladakh is a region of India in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ladakh is home to several rare and endangered species of mammals. Ladakh also has a very rich diversity of wild sheep and goats. About 200 Snow leopards,an endangered species are believed to live in Ladakh. There are a few Lynx in Ladakh's wilder areas and also the Pallas"cats. Among smaller animals, marmots are common. Hemis National Park is very famous for wild animals. One can spot the Ibex,Blue Sheep, Shapo (Ladakh Urial), Tibetan Argali, Red fox, and Marmot etc.
