Researchers in China are said to have made a huge breakthrough in creating a submarine that could travel over 3500 miles an hour.

That would make an underwater trip from Shanghai to San Francisco possible to complete in about 2 hours.

Specifics are cloudy as the project is a military one and shrouded in secrecy, but it is known that ‘supercavitation’ has a lot to do with it.

The process would encase the vessel in an air bubble to reduce drag and increase speed.

Previous attempts to master the method have come against supposedly unsolvable problems, but finally it’s believed a new method has been determined.

The scientists have figured out how to solve issues with both steering and attaining the required high launch speed.

They’ve done so by incorporating a liquid membrane that allows for greater control over the direction and rate of travel.

The approach has its critics and among them is a laboratory leader at Beijing Institute of Technology.

According to him, even with the membrane the craft would be virtually impossible to steer.

Further, should any piece of the vessel break through the outer shield, it would break off due to the density difference.
