Lightroom Tutorial: Lightroom Collections - Organizing Your Photographs in Lightroom

Don't forget to visit www.gc2photoclub.com to download the worksheet that accompanies this video.

Professional Photographer & Adobe Certified Lightroom & Photoshop Expert Geoff Cable of the GC2 Photo Club takes you through the Collections module of Adobe Lightroom, giving you the ability to improve your workflow and reduce post-shoot processing time.

As a photographer you will find yourself taking more and more photographs. Keeping these organized is a difficult task, however, using Lightroom Collections in the Library Module is an excellent way of keeping track of what image is where.

Collections are organised into folders, similar to Windows Explorer, and it is here that the power of Lightroom Collections Panel really shines through.

Having a well named and structured files system that does not change outside of lightroom is very important. If you move an image to a different folder in Windows Explorer, for example, then Lightroom will lose the link to it.

Plan your structure carefully, once you start to fill it with hundreds, if not thousands, of images, it will be difficult to restructure it without a lot of work, both in Lightroom and outside of it.

The Collections Panel can be found on the left, below the preview window, in the default Lightroom Library module view.

It is essential to minimize post-shoot editing time, especially if you're a professional trying to make a profit. The less time you spend in your digital darkroom the more time you can spend on other money-making tasks.

It's amazing how many photographers we've met that only know the basic tools, processes and add-ons available for Adobe Lightroom. If you only know a small part of the software package you're using then you are not utilizing your investment to its maximum potential.

Here at GC2 Photo Club we like to introduce you to the little tips, tricks and workarounds that help you make the most from your Lightroom and Photoshop software, giving you the tools to make informed decisions regarding your post-shoot workflow.

Any tip or trick that introduces time-saving techniques without compromising quality is a great thing for the professional photographer and the hobby photographer alike.
