Hong Kong protesters push their demand for democracy

Thousands of protesters regroup in central Hong Kong and they're vowing to continue their occupation after the government rejected of talks with students amid a two-week standoff that has shaken communist China's capitalist hub.

(SOUNDBITE) (Cantonese) OCCUPY CENTRAL WITH LOVE AND PEACE CO-FOUNDER BENNY TAI, SAYING:

"I will keep staying here with you all to demand universal suffrage!"

Protesters are encouraging citizens to join them and scores have arrived with tents, suggesting they are committed for the long haul, even though police have called for obstacles to be removed from blocking major roads.

(SOUNDBITE) (Cantonese) SCHOLARISM CO-FOUNDER JOSHUA WONG, SAYING:

"As the government has put a halt to the dialogue, we must keep staying out here on the streets. I ask everyone to bring your tents and sleeping bags here to occupy Harcourt Road overnight!"
