Bicycle designs have stayed more or less the same since the 19th century, but one innovation that makes pedaling easier might be the future of cycling.

Known as the Copenhagen Wheel, it can be fitted onto a regular bicycle, replacing the back wheel.

Assaf Biderman has already sold thousands of the Copenhagen wheels that were invented in his Cambridge, Massachusetts workshop.

It stores the energy from pedaling to give cyclists an extra push when they’re riding uphill, and maintain a constant speed while cruising downhill.

The system keeps track of your pedaling, and doesn’t increase the throttle speed when it pushes, making for a normal bike riding experience.

One feature called “flatten my city” makes the whole ride seems flat as the wheel pushes harder when the rider pedals harder.

A lithium battery is charged by the brake, or when the Copenhagen wheel is going downhill.

It can reportedly travel for up to 30 miles at a speed of 20 miles per hour.

Users can also plug the Copenhagen wheel into an outlet to charge it in addition to pedaling.

The Copenhagen wheel is programmed using a smartphone mobile app, which has a variety of features including tracking time, distance, and the amount of calories the cyclist is burning.
