We have all thought about it - what would happen if we drove off after pumping gas without removing the nozzle.

Recently a gas pump ignited after a motorist pulled away from the business with the nozzle still secured to the car. The incident occurred at a Shell station in Laurel, Maryland.

Prince George's County Fire Chief Spokesperson Mark Brady posted about the fiery mess on Twitter. At first he noted that the vehicle struck a gas pump.

A follow-up Tweet explained the pump had caught on fire and the fuel was shut off. In a third post, the chief corrected the previous alerts, noting “nozzle still in car that just fueled up pulled pump down as it pulled away with subsequent fire. No injuries. Fire is out.”

A portion of a nearby route was shut down while crews tackled the flames and cleaned up. Reportedly, the blaze badly charred the pump section of the station.

The convenience store part of the business was still open after the mishap.
