According to a Wall Street Journal investigation, the U.S. government has been secretly tracking and recording the movements of millions of cars in a database that was originally intended for asset forfeiture and drug crackdowns.

A U.S. Department of Justice intelligence program that adds motorists’ real-time movements to a secret national database has been made public, giving rise to privacy concerns.

The Wall Street Journal reviewed information about the program obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under the Freedom of Information Act. According to their research, millions of records about motorists’ activities are being scanned and stored in the database for three months, which is reportedly down from the two years it was previously held.

Overseen by the Drug Enforcement Administration, information about cars’ movements is gathered with advanced cameras installed on major highways and license plate readers that constantly feed new data into the system.
