United Airlines May Join Trend Of Narrowing Seats

Aviation Week reports that United Airlines is considering adding an extra seat per row to regular economy class sections of select Boeing 777s, installing 10 seats instead of the usual nine which is made possible with more narrow seats.

Airline legroom has shrunk over the years, and now narrow seats may be next for already crunched passengers.

According to Aviation Week, United Airlines is considering adding an extra seat into each regular economy class row of select Boeing 777s in its fleet.

So instead of nine seats across, which is the current configuration, there would be 10.

Each seat in the nine-across configuration currently measures 18-inches wide, and adding in an extra would likely shrink that by one inch, based on foreign-operated 777s with 10-seat rows.

This change would allow United to add nearly 100 more seats on those planes.

American Airlines is the only other major airline based in the U.S. that operates with 10 seats per row.
