A family of nine launched an outright attack against police in Cottonwood Arizona after assaulting a Walmart loss prevention officer, police said in a statement.
Just after midnight on Saturday the family, which included a woman and a girl, were stopped after attempting to enter the men's restroom, local media reported.
Some members of the clan assaulted the employee who called police. When officers arrived they met the family in the parking lot attempting to flee. The men immediately began attacking police.
A fight broke out which left one family member dead, a second shot and wounded and eight officers injured, including one with a gunshot to the leg.
Arizona public safety is investigating the incident.
