Humpback whales measure up to 59 feet long and weigh as much as 79,000 pounds.

There are several explanations as to why humpbacks slap their tails, which is also called lobtailing. One explanation is that it’s a form of communication: the sound from the tail slapping can be heard for several hundred meters underwater.

Another reason for the tail slapping might be due to foraging. The thinking is the sound frightens schools of fish into a tighter formation, ironically making it easier for whales to feast.
