3B Junior is a Japanese idol group with members between the ages of 10-16. During the filming of a variety show with BS Asahi one of the group’s 12 year old members collapsed.
The variety show plays games to help members improve their performance skills, one of the games was for the girls to inhale a can of helium. The lighter than air gas, helium changes the tone and resonance of the human voice, which listeners will perceive as a change in tone.
The girl suffered a cerebral air embolism while inhaling the helium, this is when air enters the blood vessels and blocks blood circulation. She was rushed to hospital where she still remains unconscious.
The TV show later noticed the cans of helium were marked: “Adult Use Only”. They’ve promised to be more careful in the future.
