Harvard China-Taiwan drama: Chinese students kicked out of model UN after Taiwan-related freak out

2015-04-14 36 Dailymotion

Several Chinese delegates at the recent Model United Nations conference at Harvard University were sent home, after protesting the conference’s categorization of Taiwan as its own country.

According to the Shanghaiist , the informational handbook listed Taiwan under “participating countries.” When the Chinese team saw the list, they demanded an apology and a reprinting of the brochures to change the category to “participating countries and regions.”

The committee at Harvard reportedly refused, but offered the delegates a set of stickers to fix their own brochures.

One participant reportedly left the conference in protest, and the others were sent home after they became “too disruptive,” according to RenRen, the online forum where one student expressed his dissatisfaction with the conference.

Conference staff released the following statement about the incident:

"Harvard Model United Nations publishes in its conference handbook the country of origin as reported by each delegation without modification. The inclusion of Taiwan is not meant as a political statement, nor does that listing represent the views of the Harvard International Relations Council.”
