A massacre carried out by jihadist group Boko Haram may be it’s deadliest ever, the Nigerian military said on Saturday. An estimated estimated 2,000 people were slaughtered, according to Amnesty International.
The attack took place in Nigeria’s northeast, in and around the town of Baga, on the shore of Lake Chad.
Witnesses say insurgents armed with automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades streamed into the large town on motorcycles and trucks. Gunmen fired on town people indiscriminately.
Most of those killed were women, children and the elderly; those could not run fast enough. Buildings were razed under RPG explosions; some people who sought shelter in homes were burned alive.
Speaking to the AFP by telephone, fisherman Borye Kime said: “I entered Baga around 2.00 am (0100 GMT) today and it was still occupied by Boko Haram … They have set up barricades in strategic locations in the town. It is corpses everywhere. The whole town smells of decomposing bodies.”
