Doctors in Wales really screwed up when they transplanted infected kidneys into these two men. Shocking details have emerged regarding the death of Darren Hughes, 42, and Robert Stuart, 67, who died within weeks of receiving an organ transplant last year.
Both men received a kidney from the same donor at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and were dead within three weeks. Both the transplanted kidneys were infected with a parasitic worm called halicephalobus gingivalis, which is found in soil and horses.
The recipients were told the donor was killed in a car crash, but in reality the kidney donor was a homeless alcoholic who had died from a brain infection—similar to meningitis—caused by the parasitic worm.
No postmortem autopsy was carried out on the 39-year-old donor before his organs were shopped around to various hospitals.
Surgeons in Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh deemed the man’s organs ‘unfit for transplant.’ But the University Hospital of Wales accepted the kidneys and notified the recipients of a “good match” on November 30. Both men were dead by Christmas.
Hughes and Stuart are two of just five recorded cases of the parasite infecting a human—all of which have been fatal. An investigation is ongoing and the families are seeking counsel from medical negligence lawyers.
