New Cold War? Russian bombers to patrol in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean

2015-04-14 53 Dailymotion

Russia announced on Wednesday plans to deploy long-range bombers on patrol near American waters, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

“In the current situation, we need to secure our military presence in the western part of the Atlantic, eastern part of the Pacific oceans and the waters of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico," said Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister.

The Russian military often uses the Tupolev Tu-95 — also known as the Bear bomber — om bombing patrols. The four-engine turbo-prop plane is 13.2 metres high and 49.1 metres long. It has a 50-metre wingspan and a 310.5-metre square wing area. The Bear was first flown in 1952 and is still tactically relevant as a standoff strike platform.

The TU-95 bomber has a massive bomb bay, which can store weapons like KH20, KH22, KH55 missiles. It is also equipped with an AM-23 autocannon in its tail turret.

Russia’s future long-range bomber deployment has not spurred opposition from the United States. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said every country has the right to operate in international airspace.

Russia’s deployment of bombers on long-range patrols was a standard practice during the Cold War that was revived by President Vladimir Putin in 2007.
