Malaysian police have arrested 12 suspects with alleged links to the Islamic State and confiscated bomb-making materials one day ahead of the ASEAN summit set to take place in Kuala Lumpur.

Eleven Malaysian men aged from 17 to 41 were on their way to Mount Nuang in Hulu Langat to test some homemade bombs Saturday evening. They were arrested by Malaysian police, and another suspect was arrested the next day.

Police officers seized bomb-making materials, including 20 kilogrammes of ammonium nitrate, 20 kilogrammes of potassium nitrate, two litres of kerosene, two remote controls, batteries and electronic weighing machines.

Authorities said the suspects could have been planning car bomb attacks, or suicide attacks.

Intelligence shows the suspects were planning to launch an attack on the federal administrative capital, Putrajaya, the Kuala Lumpur court complex, and the Bukit Aman commercial crimes department.

Police have arrested more than 90 Malaysians for alleged affiliation with ISIS.
