Cambodian police arrested Russian tycoon Sergei Polonsky on Monday morning and plan to extradite him to his country of origin to face embezzlement charges.
According to reports, he was detained at the request of Russian authorities.
The beachfront police raid started at around 6 a.m., Cambodian time.
Dozens of police officers arrived at the island owned by the tycoon, located about 4 kilometres off the shores of Sihanoukville, on three motor launches.
At the sight of the police, Polonsky plunged into the water and swam to the mainland.
The Russian state news agency Itar-Tass quoted a Cambodian interior ministry spokesman as saying that Polonsky escaped through the jungle and tried to hide there.
Police hunted the tycoon for hours. According to the Daily Telegraph, they managed to capture him only after officers opened fire.
After he was captured, television footage from the scene showed a scratched and bruised Polonsky, naked apart from a red towel around his waist, escorted by security forces, the Telegraph reported.
"I don't know, I was resting, but maybe I ran, I don't know I need a lawyer," Polonsky told Russian television on the scene.
The request for his extradition was submitted to Cambodian authorities last week after Polonsky was charged in absentia in June with fraud, for embezzling 5.7 billion rubles (US$174 million) from a luxury property development project.
Polonsky had recently been released on bail after he was arrested in December 2012 by Cambodian authorities on allegations that he took six seamen hostage while drunk.
He has been living in Cambodia ever since.
