Mexico: PRI Wins Majority in Chamber of Deputies

2015-06-08 0 Dailymotion

Yesterday's midterm elections in Mexico resulted in President Enrique Peña Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party and its allies obtaining a slim working majority in the lower house of congress. Abstentionism was over 50'% nationally. Election Day was marred by violence, mainly in the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, where officials had to close 600 polling stations. Activists in the state of Guerrero in solidarity with the 43 missing Ayotzinapa students blocked access to many polling stations, calling for a boycott of the elections. In Oaxaca, the government deployed 16,000 security personnel, "to maintain order", and arrested 88 protesters. Clayton Conn reports from Oaxaca. teleSUR
