Syria – Turkish Buffer Zone Questioned

A clause in the Charter of the United Nations gives international parties the right to intervene in conflicts to protect civilians. Turkey is talking about creating a safe area under this criteria, but many are questioning the country’s motives. The Turkish buffer zone reaches 100 kilometers into Syrian territory. Some analysts see Turkey’s move as preemptive. While Turkey claims that it would set up a region for displaced people, the reality on the ground is different, as a number of groups vie for control of the area.
