When it comes to making our Houston dental patients look their best, Cosmetic Dentists of Houston is the leader. One of our methods to ensuring every one of our patients that come into our dentist office looks their best is providing them with either direct bonded veneers or porcelain veneers.

There are different benefits for each dental option, regarding price range, appearance, and durability.

“Direct bonded veneer can be less costly up front,” Dr. Amanda Canto, Houston cosmetic dentist, says. “They can be more conservative with little to no tooth structure removal. And they are done in one visit, generally.”

Dr. Canto says that conducting a direct bonded veneer procedure takes a lot of talent and artistic skill from the dentist because they have to sculpt the tooth. This procedure is conducted in office.

Porcelain veneers can be placed on the tooth with very little tooth reduction.

“Porcelain veneers can literally be prepared in the tooth and designed by the dentist,” Dr. Canto says. “An impression is taken and sent to the laboratory and a beautiful lifelike veneer is made that lasts quite a bit longer [than a direct bonded veneer].”

Dr. Canto adds that the main difference between the two types of veneers is that the composite veneer, or direct bonded veneer, will stain over time, which all depends on eating, drinking and other oral habits. This means it could need to be replaced more often ­ sometimes every 3­5 years.

“A porcelain veneer is more like a beautiful china plate that will hold its color and its shine and its texture,” Dr. Canto says.
