SAN DIEGO — A 2-year-old pit bull is facing the death penalty after he accidentally mauled his owner's 3-day-old child.
On the evening of April 21, the family was reportedly in bed watching television with their dog Polo and their newborn baby boy when the mother suddenly coughed. The young canine, an American Staffordshire Terrier-Great Dane mix, was caught off guard by the noise and suddenly reacted by biting the newborn.
The parents were able to eventually pull the dog off the child, but when they tried calling 9-1-1, they were unable to connect on two separate attempts – the first call lasting 28 seconds, and the second lasting 34 seconds before they chose to give up. The parents quickly rushed to the hospital, but the infant was pronounced dead on arrival.
Polo was collected by animal control officers and placed into quarantine for ten days to determine if he has rabies. It will be up to his owners whether he is released into their care, or put down for his fatal mistake.
