North Korea confirms it restarted plutonium production at nuclear facility in May

Satellite images obtained in February suggested something was going on even then at the Yongbyon nuclear reactor facility.

The U.S. government even knew in January they were testing missile engines.

“Satellite images suggest “significant activity” is taking place at a North Korean laboratory that could separate plutonium for nuclear weapons.

The photos appear on 38 North, a US website that monitors sensitive sites in the country.

The website says that during the past five weeks exhaust plumes have been seen two or three times at the radiochemical laboratory complex at Yongbyon.”

North Korea on Wednesday confirmed that it has resumed the production of plutonium at its Yongbyon nuclear reactor facility. Pyongyang’s Atomic Energy Institute, which controls the country’s main nuclear facilities at Yongbyon, said, “We have reprocessed spent nuclear fuel rods removed from a graphite-moderated reactor,” according to Japan’s Kyodo News.
