MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN — Sherelle Smith, sister of Sylville Smith, the Milwaukee man who was shot dead by a police officer over the weekend, has urged rioters to burn the suburbs down.

On Saturday, 23-year-old Sylville Smith was killed in an officer-involved shooting that sparked racially charged riots over the weekend.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Sherelle Smith condemned the rioting in her own neighborhood, before saying, “Take that sh*t to the suburbs. Burn that sh*t down!”

CNN edited out that part of the interview in a report titled “Residents trying to heal.” The report said Smith was “calling for peace” and cut to footage of Smith saying, “Don’t bring that violence here.”

After conservative media outlets called out CNN for the edit, correspondent Ana Cabrera took to Twitter to admit that Smith’s comments had been mischaracterized. “We shorthanded sister’s quote,” Cabrera tweeted. “Unintentionally gave the impression she was calling for peace everywhere.”

Here’s what Sherelle Smith actually said:

“Burnin down sh*t ain’t going to help nothin! Y’all burnin’ down sh*t we need in our community. Take that sh*t to the suburbs. Burn that sh*t down! We need our sh*t! We need our weaves. I don’t wear it. But we need it.”
