The parking lot outside of the Cascade Mall in the U.S. city of Burlington, Washington state, remained closed on Saturday as investigators continued to search for clues into the grisly shooting deaths of five people on Friday night by a lone gunman.

Authorities in Burlington, about an hour north of Seattle, said a lone gunman had entered the Macy's department store at around 19:00 that evening with a rifle, killing four women and one man.

A blurry image of the suspect captured on surveillance video, in which it shows him entering the mall without a weapon, was released later that night.

According to Sergeant Mark Francis, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, there was just one armed shooter.

The police were first alerted about the incident at 18:58 local time.

The shopping mall was evacuated, and searched by state and local law enforcement agencies.

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been sent to the scene.

The FBI has stated that there is no information to suggest additional attacks are planned in the state.

Police are currently on the manhunt for the shooter.
