Viewed with the benefit of hindsight, the totalitarian menace the US led Western world was up against reveals itself as much more treacherous than old school anti-Communists like Edward Griffin could have foreseen in their worst nightmares. In spite of their unceasing efforts to the contrary, Soviet-style Communism consigned itself to the ash heap of history without firing so much as a single shot. When Reagan`s victory in the presidential elections of 1980 heralded the beginning of the 2nd Cold War, most experts on strategy and international relations this side of the Iron Curtain knew full well that despite both the Cassandrean forebodings of anti-Communists and the howling triumphalism of the fifth columnists, Soviet Communism was as good as done for. Being in the midst of a free-fall into dilapidation, the formidable edifice of the Soviet bloc was already beyond repair and only needed a spirited push to make it collapse into oblivion.
