Today Rahul Gandhi, with an acute memory of his father, is trying to turn the bofors gun into the air. India's defence deals have always been a dodgy mess, many have been cancelled like the MMRCA. But does Rahul Gandhi have a smoking gun? So far no, he has suggestion and innuendo. But as a politician, he's using every microphone, every podium to hammer it home. The congress thinks the perception momentum is with them, they're milking it. The BJP is fighting back hammer and tongs. Almost every senior minister has spoken out, some facts need to be put on record. In 2012, it was the UPA government that decided to leave hal out of the rafale deal. A suggestion of the inclusion of reliance as a private sector player was made as far back as then. India needs private operators making arms in India, we can't be the world's biggest arms importer forever. The plane is good. Two top IAF officers have now come out to point out that this deal is better than any UPA signed. Plane costs vary on the number you order and the specifications of the arms and goodies they are loaded with it. But the facts in a political debate do not always matter.
