The situation remained tense in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, where violent clashes claimed the lives of eight people, including four farmers, on Sunday. Section 144 is in force in the district and political leaders have been barred from going there, in fact, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and several other netas were detained by police when they staged protests or attempted to visit the violence-hit district.
