The group was formed in 1967 by students who, considering the period, had the intuition to try to break into rock music by mixing it with classical, and inverting the factors, using classical instruiments for rock, and rock instruments for classical, thus implementing one of the first attempts at fusion between musical genres, certainly and ambition effort for the times, an early example of art-rock. Standard rock with a mix of psychedelia and baroque pop, featuring some fuzz guitars and solid vocal harmonies. I wonder if Jeff Lynne listened to The New York Rock & Roll Ensamble's records.
