Chulalongkorn University Chula Baiya Vaccine
Baiya vaccine is a plant-based subunit vaccine. The first generation of vaccines has already got to trials, but modifications to tackle the virus’ variants are still needed. The second generation of the vaccine has already been tested in humans with promising results in terms of immunogenicity and safety. This year, phase two clinical trials will begin.
“In our history, we have never invented an original plant-based drug from Thailand. There are so many challenges, especially when we are a trailblazer. We’ve made mistakes and we’ve learned from those mistakes. So, what we do here at Baiya, we are not just aiming to produce vaccines and support Thai people, but we're doing research, and development, and manufacturing, at an international standard,” said Suthira Taychakhoonavudh, a faculty member at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Chulalongkorn University and CEO and co-founder of Baiya Phytopharm
Baiya Phytopharm aims for Thailand to have pharmaceutical and health security. In the long run, the company aims to produce this vaccine at a large enough scale to reduce imports and eventually export to other countries as well.
