India takes a monumental leap towards defence self-reliance as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approves the execution model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. Under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will partner with both public and private sector companies on a competitive basis to develop India’s first 5th-generation stealth fighter jet. With a project cost of ₹15,000 crore, the AMCA will feature advanced stealth capabilities, super cruise, electronic warfare systems, and multi-role combat efficiency.
This game-changing initiative places India alongside the US, China, and Russia as it prepares to join the elite club of nations operating stealth fighter jets. The AMCA is designed for both the Indian Air Force and Navy, with a prototype expected by 2028–29 and full-scale production slated for 2032–33. It marks a strategic response to increasing regional tensions, especially with China and Pakistan, and addresses India’s urgent need to modernise its air fleet, which has shrunk to 31 squadrons against the required 42.
The newly approved industry partnership model levels the playing field for private firms like Tata, Adani, and L&T, challenging the monopoly of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This move is expected to fast-track production timelines, reduce costs, and strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
