An Indian court sentenced a Pakistani member of an Islamist militant group to death over the 2008 Mumbai attacks. On Monday, the court found Mohammad Ajmal Kasab guilty on more than 80 charges, including murder and waging war on India.

"Ajmal Amir Kasab has been given death penalty on four charges."

Kasab was filmed at the crime scene, walking through Mumbai's main train station carrying an AK-47 rifle and a knapsack on his back. Nearly 60 people were gunned down in the crowded station.

The guilty verdict came shortly after the prime ministers of India and Pakistan held a meeting in Bhutan to revive peace talks that had been stalled by the Mumbai attacks.

Kasab has the option to appeal the sentence in superior courts before moving a mercy plea to the Indian president, a process that takes years. India’s last execution was in 2004.

In India, the death penalty is awarded for the "rarest of rare" crimes and is carried out by hanging. The sentence must be confirmed by a higher court.

Kasab was the only gunman captured alive in the coordinated three day rampage in November 2008 through key landmarks in India's financial capital, including two luxury hotels, the main train station and a Jewish center.
