Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 96 people and left an estimated 2,000 missing in China.

Rains struck in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu. The worst hit was the county seat of Zhouqu in the province's Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, with reports claiming half of it is under water.

Many houses collapsed and streets and whole roads are a meter under mud and water.

Power was cut in some of the affected areas and so it is not known how many of the missing are in danger or simply out of contact.

The Lanzhou Military Area Command in the capital of the province have dispatched 2,400 soldiers to help with rescue efforts. But thick mud is hampering rescue operations.

45,000 people had been evacuated.

Around China, the country's worst flooding in a decade has killed more than 1,100 people this year, with more than 600 still missing. The floods have caused billions of pounds in damage across 28 provinces and regions.
