A powerful blast in Vegalarga, Colombia on Tuesday.

The bomb was detonated as the small public transport vehicle drove in front of the police station.

The blast damaged homes as far as three blocks away from the center of the explosion.

The police station was reduced to rubble, as were several homes surrounding the area.

Wire services reported on Wednesday that at least four people -- three police and the driver of the vehicle -- died.

Medical authorities rushed about 20 injured people into local hospitals.
The bomb was allegedly planted by guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

In Bogota, President Santos say the attack shows the rebels are "desperate."

[Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian President]:
"Putting a bomb on a bus full of farmers and exploding it in front of a police station, that means you General Navaz and your people, all our police, our soldiers on land and sea, are doing a good job because the enemy is desperate. This is a cowardly and desperate act."

Vegalarga is 127 miles south of the capital Bogota and it sits in an area with a strong FARC presence, in the Huila region.

Officials attribute several recent bombings in Huila at police and military headquarters to the FARC.
