Five Arrested on Illegal Firearms Possession in Bangkok

Thai police arrested five people suspected of illegal possession of firearms, ammunitions and explosives. The ‘red shirt’ members were arrested in Bangkok, near the protest site of their rival 'yellow shirt' protesters.

Thai police said on Tuesday that five people have been arrested on suspicion of unauthorized possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

The arrests came after a rally by anti-government 'red shirt' protesters two days ago. Their rival, royalist 'yellow shirts' started their own demonstration on Tuesday in the same part of Bangkok.

Police said 37-year-old suspect Tawatchai Iamnark, who joined 'red shirt' rallies last year, was arrested near the 'yellow shirt' protest site for carrying explosive devices while driving his motorbike.

Tawatchai says he wants to see change in the country and denies possessing the explosives.

"I want some changes in the country. I don't want it to be like this...I don't want violence. I don't want other people to die. I've never wanted people to die."

The police later arrested four other suspects in their homes. Police found rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 and M-16 rifle bullets and M-60 machine gun bullets.

The suspects deny the charges.

Thai 'yellow shirt' demonstrators threatened to prolong the protest if the government fails to revoke an agreement with Cambodia aimed at solving a long-running border dispute.
