Chinese Regime Detains, Monitors Rights Lawyers and Activist

Rights lawyers and dissidents in China are being targeted by the Chinese regime, with many reporting they are being detained or closely watched by authorities. Some believe the new wave of pressure is due to the Chinese Communist Party's top two political meetings coming up next Month.

The Chinese regime apparently has started again to crack down on dissidents around the country. Since last week, scores of rights lawyers and democracy activists have been detained or placed under house arrest.

Beijing rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong was taken by police on Saturday. This is the second time Jiang has been detained in a week. Last Wednesday, he was detained after attending a gathering with fellow activists in Beijing. Another participant, rights lawyer Tang Jitian was also detained. He hasn't been heard from since.

In Xi'an, democracy activist Fu Shen says authorities are monitoring him and other dissidents.

[Fu Shen, Xi'an Democracy Activist]:
"I was intercepted on the way to see my mother. They have restricted my movements, not letting me out of their sight. I think this will go on for 15 to 20 days. My friends in Xi'an are basically in the same situation."

Guangzhou rights lawyer Liu Shihui was beaten on Sunday soon after leaving his home.

Other dissidents monitored by Chinese authorities include lawyer Ni Yulan in Beijing, activist Zu Yufu in Zhejiang and Professor Sun Wenguagn in Shandong.

Some believe Chinese authorities are cracking down on dissidents because they fear an Egyptian style uprising against the regime's rule. Others think the move is in preparation for two of the Chinese Communist Party's most important political meetings. The national meeting of the regime's advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, will begin on March 3, while its legislature, the National People's Congress, will meet on March 5.
