Hong Kong's government has come under increasing public criticism recently for not doing enough to help the poor cope with mounting inflation.

With inflation expected to reach 4.5 percent this year, activists say more relief and welfare measures are needed.

Police used pepper spray on the demonstrators after they failed to disperse peacefully.

Police said that the protesters were arrested after they blocked roads in the city's downtown financial district and confronted officers.

Two boys, aged 12 and 13, were arrested and several people were injured in the standoff.

Hong Kong's security secretary said the use of violence against police would not be tolerated.

"I want denounce the use of violence. I call on the public to conduct any rally and express their opinion in a peaceful and lawful way."

Organizers of Sunday's protest say over 10,000 people took part.
